Fashion Questions & Answers

carolina herrera, fall 2005.

Here is a golden opportunity for someone who knows fashion, loves fashion, has an acute fashion sense and loves to write about it, to achieve considerable local - as well as world wide - prominence as a fashion writer by sharing her passion with the fashionistas of our fair city, as well as with all the fashionable people around the world.

Don't believe it? The search for "fashion questions and anwers" on the Web and you'll find that we have 1st and 2nd place in Google, in Yahoo, in AOL, and 2nd and 3rd place in MSN. This is awesome exposure - something most web sites can only dream about.

The scene is set, the audience is waiting, and all we need is a local fashion fanatic to step into the spotlight, and let the drama of mainstream fashion weave its beguiling alure through the lives and loves of our lovely ladies.

Fashion Questions with Amanda Mandelli

Dear Amanda;
I purchased a knee - length brown silk ruffled skirt and a black sheer cardigan. I think black boots would look smart. What type of boots would you suggest, especially now, almost the end of the winter season? I would hate to invest in something that would be out of style next year.
Thanks;

Dear Marie;
I would recommend black boots that come to just below the knee. Conceivably something with a pointed toe and a slim, tall heel. I would positively suggest a leather boot - stay away from patent - so that they can become a staple of your wardrobe. These boots are classics and will be something you can wear with other attire next fall and winter. They look terrific with skirts, trousers or jeans.

Until next time,

Dear Amanda;
Just read an article in the Time Magazine "Style and Design " Spring Supplement. C & C T shirts were mentioned. Where can I find them?

Dear Marie;
C & C T shirts are not very easy to find, and I have actually never seen them in boutiques or department stores. They are available online at shoplastyle.com and their prices range from $39.00 to $55.00. I have also found them at shop bop.com, this websites prices are a slightly higher, but they offer hundreds of styles compared to shoplastyle's ten or so choices. If you indeed purchase one, may I suggest the long ballet tee, it is a personal favorite of mine.

Dear Amanda;
I am required to wear kahki pants and a white shirt (NOT a polo or T) for an upcoming trade show. I have found a good looking Brooks Brothers white shirt; I've found some kahki pants. Now I need to know what style and color shoes. Since I will be on my feet all day, my first choice would be some good walking tennis shoes but know these would not be appropriate. Also, depending on the color of the shoes, what color socks (I definitely would prefer socks to hose). By the way, I am in my 60's if that makes any difference.
Thanks for any advice you can dispense!
Joy Jenkins (joy.jenkins@usa.net)

Dear Joy;
My advice is to stay away from the tennis shoes! I would go with more of a loafer type shoe in a brown. I would suggest a tan coloured sock. Make sure when choosing your socks that you do not go with a dark brown, this colour choice would not be very flattering with khaki pants. I would also choose a sock with some texture or even a pattern to it like, ribbed, argyle or even hounds tooth.

born's "fire fox" shoes
My all time favorite loafer is made by Born and can be found at www.bornshoes.com. They have an array of styles to choose from. The sample I recommend is from their casual collection. The name of the shoe is "fire" and the colour I have chosen is "fox". This shoe is amazing and you can wear it and remain in style for a very long time. Born Shoes carry nothing but the best in comfortable classics!

Dear Amanda;
I am the mother of the bridgegroom. The wedding will be late afternoon, the bridesmaids are wearing a sliver lilac blue. I have light brown hair with blonde highlights, and blue eyes, my height is 5.6. Please can you advise me on what to wear - her mother has the advantage of having a daughter who does dress designing and I really do not want to feel out of place. The wedding is at the end of May.

Kind regards
Jaye Hubbard

Dear Jaye;
Proper etiquette on this subject is that the mother of the bride should be the first to choose her attire for the wedding. She should decide how long, what colour and what style. She should then tell the groom's mother what her decision is, so that you may plan your outfit accordingly. If the bride's mother wears long and semi-formal, as well should you. You should not wear the same colour as the mother of the bride or the bridesmaids, however you should wear a colour that photographs well with everyone else in the wedding party. The style of the dress should be keyed to the elaborateness of the wedding. Long skirts and dresses are considered appropriate for any wedding from noon on.

If the wedding is evening formal you should wear a long evening or dinner dress. For semiformal evening you should wear a long or street-length dress. For informal daytime weddings you should go with a short afternoon or cocktail dress. At an informal evening wedding you should always wear the same length dress as the bride.

As far as colours go, if for some reason you are not able to get together with the mother of the bride to decide upon nicely contrasting colours, some of the colours that would blend nicely with the bridesmaids dresses are a silver or smoke colour, heather (as long as it's not the same as the lilac of the bridesmaids), grey-blue, grey-green or a taupe rose. Here are some samples of colours that would blend nicely with the bridesmaids colours and styles that are appropriate for semiformal and formal day and evening.

But I would highly recommend to get together with the bride's mother so that the proper arrangements can be made, and I am sure it will turn out wonderful! Until next time,
Amanda Mandelli

Dear Amanda;
I have an off-white winter suit with satin trimming, but the jacket has shoulder pads. Should I remove them?

Dear Shoulder Pads;
With all of the trends that come and go, shoulder pads are one that some designers have tried to bring back. However, it just hasn't happened. I would absolutely remove them from the suit, but do not toss them out just yet. We can never tell what is going to happen next in the ever changing world of fashion.

Until next time,
Amanda Mandelli
