Fashion Questions & Answers |
carolina herrera, fall 2005. |
Here is a golden opportunity for someone who knows fashion, loves fashion, has an acute fashion sense and loves to write about it, to achieve considerable local - as well as world wide - prominence as a fashion writer by sharing her passion with the fashionistas of our fair city, as well as with all the fashionable people around the world.
Don't believe it? The search for "fashion questions and anwers" on the Web and you'll find that we have 1st and 2nd place in Google, in Yahoo, in AOL, and 2nd and 3rd place in MSN. This is awesome exposure - something most web sites can only dream about.
The scene is set, the audience is waiting, and all we need is a local fashion fanatic to step into the spotlight, and let the drama of mainstream fashion weave its beguiling alure through the lives and loves of our lovely ladies.

Hi Amanda
What type of body do capri pants look best on? I am 5" 5, 155 lbs. and I have never worn them because I thought they looked best on taller women and not shorter chunkier women. Is this true?
Thanks,
Kelly
Dear Kelly,
| Capri pants do look best on a taller more slim woman. Those of us under 5' 5" should try and steer clear of them. The capri dilemma doesn't have so much to do with size as it does height. They tend to make shorter women appear shorter than they actually are. With that said, let me tell you that if you do decide to wear capri pants this spring, pair them with high heeled sandals or sling backs. This will help elongate your body, therefore giving you the appearance of being taller and more slender, and this will also make a chic fashion statement. |

Hi Amanda
There are so many cute shoes out there that are dressy, but "thong" type. What I am referring to, for example are the pointed shoes with a small heel, that you slip into like slippers, with no backs. They can be very dressy, and worn to the office with a skirt, etc. Is it OK / should I be wearing hose? Or is it a faux pas?
Thanks!!
Jennifer
Dear Jennifer
When wearing a dressier mule or slide-ons, it is not necessary to wear hose, but you certainly can if you would like. This is in no way a fashion faux pas. To suit my own personal taste, I would more than likely not wear nylons with mules, but you also have to remember that I do not work in an environment where it is a rule. Most offices do require you to wear hose. If that's the case with your job, I say go for it! Another thing for you to remember is that a lot of designers showed hose and even tights for the spring season with slide-ons, which is highly unusual, so don't worry you'll look great!

Dear Amanda,
I am in a quandary about nylon hosiery. I see brides and mothers of brides as well as other people with beautiful dresses and no stockings. I am 64 and do go without stockings more than I used to - but only in the summer. We are expecting an invitation to a May 1 event which is being called a cocktail party at a private country club though it actually is to celebrate a wedding. I will wear strappy shoes. What about hosiery?
Could you also suggest a type of dress for afternoon and then also what would be nice for evening. We do not know the time yet.
Hopefully you will find time to help me out.
Thank you.
Sandy Simmons
Dear Sandy
I would not wear the nylons. You should go to your local spa or salon, have a pedicure and wear those strappy shoes! I wouldn't worry about it being in May. The first day of spring is March 21st and that is the appropriate time to begin wearing open toed shoes, if you still go by the rules. As I have stated in other answers, it has become a fashion trend to wear open toed shoes all year round, so I would definitely not let the fact that it is not summer stop me.

As far as dresses go, I would probably wear a cocktail dress after 5:00pm. If the event is before that you will need to wear a long afternoon dress. Perhaps something ultra-feminine with a sheer, floaty fabric. If you are like most women the first thing you do when you hear "party" is pull out the black, but I would shy away from it for this event. Bright, vivid colours are in for spring, and a country club gathering is the perfect place to show these colours off! If you, like a lot of other women feel you cannot pull off the brighter colours then I would go with a more "country club", nautical feel. Navy, with small polka-dots in an afternoon dress will look fantastic. |

Dear Amanda
is it unfashionable to wear whites, i.e. dresses, pant-suits in winter?
Dear White in Winter
White in winter is an unquestionable fashion faux pas. Designers try to bring in white during this season to be different or try to bend the rules of fashion, but consumers usually do not go for it. I love to see off-white and winter white during the cold months, but you should undeniably stay away from true whites in dresses, pant suits and shoes.
And there is a good reason why. White always looks cool in summer, which is great. But this same cool impression comes across as downright cold in winter. And no woman I know wants to appear cold, right?

Dear Amanda
Amanda, I seem to have the problem that every woman wants to have. I am 5' 10" tall. I have skinny legs and arms, and a high waist. I am very conscious of fashion and I like to dress feminine but stylish. Did I tell you I am 55 :) and if I must say so myself, a very young 55 :)
I have problems wearing skirts and dresses for I can't wear heels (arthritis problem) and I believe that skirts and dresses look silly on a person in flats with skinny legs. Am I wrong?
Any solutions as to what type of skirt and dress would look good on me and make me a little more curvy?
Ruth
Dear Ruth
| My personal opinion is that you have been terribly misguided about tall, thin women looking silly when wearing skirts and dresses. If I were you I would be proud of my size and my height and wear the skirts. With the various styles of skirts that we have accessible to us this season, it should be very easy to find several that look fabulous with ballerina flats or kitten heels. |

|

|
Designers search high and low for thin models over 5' 7". The reason is that these models look better in clothes than the average woman and are easiest to fit. We all have qualms about the way we look and we can all find something wrong with our appearance, but being tall and thin is not something to feel uncomfortable about, you have every reason to be proud! I have selected some pictures for you to use as examples. I hope I have been of some help to you. |
And as far as arthritis is concerned, many people have got rid of their arthritis by following the simple nutritional routine described in the "health" pages
on this web site. I'd check it out if I were you.
