 anthropologie - summer 2004 |
We thank New York Fashion writer Amanda Mandelli for having written our fashion articles for two years. However, Amanda has now gone on to bigger and better things, and we wish her well.
Meanwhile, we are looking for a local fashion writer, someone who would like to attain some not inconsiderable prominence in the greater Victoria area - even become a fashion maven, perhaps - and share her acute fashion sense with the lively folk of our fair city. |

Dear Amanda,
I don't know what to wear for my graduation under the gown. The school prefers us to wear something black, but its going to be summer. What do you think its appropriate to wear?
Thank you.
Rebeca
Dear Rebeca,
First things first! I would like to say congratulations on your upcoming graduation.
| Since the school prefers you to wear black attire for your graduation day, I would definitely go with that. You may want to wear something black and white or even black mixed with some of this season's beautiful colours. |

Since it is more than likely going to be warm weather and you are also going to have your cap and gown on over your dress, I would go with something a little above the knee and sleeveless or even strapless. Strapless does not always have to equal formal. I have selected a couple of dresses which I think would not only be appropriate, but also adorable for this occasion. |
I hope everything turns out great for you!
Until next time,

Dear Amanda,
I am a 63 year old woman with a beautiful light pink suit that I have only worn one other time. I am flying to Anchorage, Alaska for Easter and wanted to wear the suit to church with my family. (It packs well). It is after March 21st but there is 30 inches of snow on the ground. Would this be proper?
Thank you,
Barbara
Dear Barbara,
I would say if you are going to be able to keep warm in that beautiful pink suit that you love, you should wear it! We cannot possibly be prepared for the weather that they are used to in Alaska. During this time of year it will be very hard to find something along the lines of an Easter dress that will be warm enough for the temperatures there.
I do not think that this will be any sort of fashion faux pas on your part. After all it is Easter, and spring has arrived! I would dress for it.
Until next time,
Amanda

Dear Amanda
My kids are making fun of me ? They say that white denim is 80's and looks silly. I just bought a white denim jean jacket. Is it true that white denim is out of fashion?
Thanks,
Vee
Dear Vee
| Unfortunately, your kids are more or less accurate. White denim jackets do stem from the 80's and the majority of them do tend to have a dated air about them. The eighties have made a small comeback the last couple of seasons, but it is all about the way you pull it off. You can either look very retro and chic or you can look like you have just stepped straight out of that decade. The latter, you do not want. |

It can be very hard to pull off this kind of look. A great number of eccentric fashionistas can do it no matter what decade they are channeling, but for the average person, it is very hard to create a look that is vintage, yet also undeniably "now". My advice to you is, exchange the white denim for something a little less 80's and a little more current. Here are some pictures of denim jackets that are in style at the moment. |

Dear Amanda,
I will be attending a wedding in Northern England this summer and am curious as to attire. I have been told that it is custom for women to wear hats. The wedding ceremony will take place at a church at 2:15 p.m. with reception to follow at the Netherwood Hotel in Grange over Sands. I expect that this will be a very traditional wedding. Help!
Susan;
Dear Susan
While you are not at all expected to wear a head covering to a traditional wedding in England, my suggestion to you would be to dress in one. First of all, most of the local women probably will, as it is much more customary for them than it is for us here in the states. Second, I love wearing hats and would jump at the chance to wear one for this celebration, as it is the perfect time to do so. I would also consider wearing short, afternoon gloves. Just make sure that they come just past the wrist and are not black. A white lace or eyelet would be perfect if it goes well with your dress.
As far as clothing is concerned, proper etiquette suggests that you wear a street length or short afternoon dress, as a long, or cocktail dress would just be to formal to wear to a 2:15 wedding. Personally, I would go with the street length, it hits around mid-calf and would look much better with a hat than a shorter dress would. I would go with something in a sheer, flowing fabric for summer, and I would also wear very sensible pumps. I would steer clear of anything over the top or even the least bit trendy, as I think that a wedding being held at a church in England calls for an elegant, classy approach to dressing. I hope you have a great time!

Dear Amanda
We need to know when it is appropriate to begin wearing cropped pants and no socks. Does it hold true to the rule of not wearing white shoes until Memorial Day?
Thank you,
Sheila
Dear Sheila
The answer to your cropped pants question is, no. You do not have to wait until Memorial Day to wear these. I start wearing mine after March 21st, which is the first day of spring. As long as the weather is appropriate, anytime after this date will be fine.

Dear Amanda,
How do I properly wear a pocket watch with a tux and vest?
Brian
Dear Brian,
In a style set by Prince Albert, the chain should be drawn across your waist from one vest pocket to the other. Neither the watch, nor the trinket attached to the other side of the chain should be visible.
