 anthropologie - summer 2004 |
We thank New York Fashion writer Amanda Mandelli for having written our fashion articles for two years. However, Amanda has now gone on to bigger and better things, and we wish her well.
Meanwhile, we are looking for a local fashion writer, someone who would like to attain some not inconsiderable prominence in the greater Victoria area - even become a fashion maven, perhaps - and share her acute fashion sense with the lively folk of our fair city. |

Dear Amanda,
With white now in, I've broken down and purchased a white cotton (chino-style material) A-line, knee-length skirt. I picture myself wearing it to work or to bridal showers, things like that. I've never been into white bottoms, so I don't know what to wear for a panty to minimize what may show through. I've been told wearing my usual thongs will show through, so I've been advised to use nude colored boyshorts or something like that. I would also like to avoid lines, though it is A-line, it is still somewhat form-fitting at the hips and butt. I'm not the type of person to wear a slip so I'm at a loss for what the correct undergarment is -- there are so many to choose from!
Please advise!
Under White
Dear Under White,
| I would not suggest that you wear boy-shorts if the skirt is in anyway form fitting. I think your best bet is to go with a product called "Spanx". You can go to www.spanx.com and order these online. You will need to order the "Power Panties". There is a size chart on the website and they are sized just like panty hose. Spanx will eliminate your visible panty line problem, and as they are nude they will also do away with the "see through" problem. |

Dear Amanda,
What colour hose would you wear with a white dress, black patent heels, black jacket and black hat?
Janice
Dear Janice,
Wow…You like to dress dramatically, don't you? The only real choice you have is to wear white hose. If you do not mind, let me suggest wearing white shoes, dress and hat, with a black jacket for a more dramatic accent. I am a little concerned about the black on the top and bottom, with white in the middle. I am afraid that you could look like you are separated into two parts.
Until next time,
Amanda

Dear Amanda,
I am a fifty year old who has lost weight and inches and am therefore in the market for a new wardrobe. I don't want to end up with a closet like I presently have …… too much of low quality clothing. I would like a wardrobe of a couple of quality "mix and match" outfits for work wear, evening wear and leisure (shorts, jeans and t-shirts) wear. How many jeans does a woman really need in her closet? … certainly not the 8 pair I presently have. Can you help by outlining some very basic necessities? Thanks for your assistance.

Congratulations on your weight loss! I would suggest that you go with designers such as Liz Claiborne and Ralph Lauren. There is a reason that these designers are so successful - they know how to cut garments to make them fit a woman's body.
You need 3 or 4 pairs of great jeans, and I recommend either of these designers to give you a cut that will fit well. If you want a look that is a little more fashionable, I would go with the Ralph Lauren jeans, but for a more classic fit, Liz is the way to go. |
| You need a pair of basic black pants. Flat front pants will provide a slimming effect. For dress shirts either of these designers would be great. They both have button-down cotton dress shirts which will look great for the office. If you are required to wear suits to work, I would choose Ralph Lauren. He is the best when it comes to suits for the working woman. He offers many different colours and styles; in this way you will not get bored with basics such as black, navy, etc. |

Hello, my name is Brigitte,
and when I'm older I wish to be a fashion designer. And I was wondering if you could give me a phew tips on how to get into the business, what you need to know etc.
Dear Brigitte,
The fashion industry is a very hard thing to break into. It takes someone who stands out above the rest. Someone with vast creativity, a flair for originality and who doesn't conform in their perception (and clothing) to the standard mold in society.
My personal advice to you would be to look into a great art and design college such as Parson's School of Design in New York. Schools such as Parson's have made some very creative people into very successful fashion designers. The reason Parson's is so successful is that they give you a chance to be an intern for some of the top names in fashion. You will be able to work hand in hand with fashion designers and possibly one day even design for them.
If perhaps you want to study abroad for a while I would check into art and design schools in London, Paris, and Milan, Italy.
Until next time,

Hi Amanda,
I am 48 years old and my son is getting married in July. I need some help picking out a dress for the wedding. I am 5 feet tall and weigh 130 lbs. I wear my hair very short. What kind of neckline should I wear to make me look taller and slimmer? My complexion and hair are both dark and my skin has red undertones. The wedding will be at 3:00pm and the bridesmaids will be wearing blue. Please recommend a colour and style. Thank you.
Blanche

For a 3:00pm wedding I would go with something semi-formal. You can wear either long or street length. My suggestion to you would be to go with a long, but somewhat simple dress, as this will make you look taller and slimmer. I would also wear heels, I would suggest at the very least a 2 ½ to 3 inch. The long dress in combination with the heels will do wonders for slimming down and elongating the body.
As far as colour goes, I think a silvery-grey would go good with your complexion. Or perhaps a blue, however, you should not wear the same colour blue as the bridesmaid dresses, but something that blends nicely and will photograph well together. |
There are so many necklines to choose from, but my suggestion would be to wear a slightly lower cut one, since you would like to appear taller and slimmer. Low V-necks do give this impression. I have selected some things that you can look at to obtain a few ideas.
The dresses I have selected can be found at www.modernbride.com They come in an array of colours, but I would choose a grey, silver or blue that compliments the bridesmaids dresses. |
