fashion news writer amanda mandelliWe thank New York Fashion writer Amanda Mandelli for having written our fashion articles for two years. However, Amanda has now gone on to bigger and better things, and we wish her well.

Meanwhile, we are looking for a local fashion writer, someone who would like to attain some not inconsiderable prominence in the greater Victoria area - even become a fashion maven, perhaps - and share her acute fashion sense with the lively folk of our fair city.

Fashion Questions with Amanda Mandelli

Hi Amanda,
I was wondering what's the rule for wearing jeans with jean jackets?
Jen

Dear Jen,
There really is no certain rule for jeans and jean jackets. I personally like to wear one or the other. On the rare occasions that I do wear jeans and a denim jacket together, I like to make sure they do not match. I usually wear the lighter colour on the bottom and the dark denim as my jacket. They really should be two totally different colours, to keep your outfit from looking dated.

Dear Amanda,
I have had the life-long problem of having very narrow shoulders. When shoulder pads were popular, I had removable molded foam rubber shoulder pads and wore them under everything. I was in my glory. Now however, I think they (shoulder pads) are not considered stylish. Am I correct?

What can I do to distract from my narrow shoulders? When I wear shoulder pads, it makes my waist and hips look slimmer and more proportioned. Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Jill

Dear Jill
You really do not have to give up the shoulder pads completely. Some things are made with small shoulder pads which really aren't that visible. You can hardly tell you are wearing them. I would not, however, have shoulder pads sewn on to anything, as this does give your clothing that 1980's feel. Wearing outfits with jackets does help with the narrow shoulder problem, but there is really nothing that will eliminate it.

You can do things which will help, like wearing waist cinching belts or dress shirts which have darts around the shoulders that are set at an angle instead of straight across.

Hi Amanda,
I have a very sheer dress that which has a liner in it that I want to wear for my son's wedding. I bought a slip thinking that would do it. However, even with the slip everything shows through. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Dear Gina
Sheer dresses are very popular this summer, but they do present the problem of what to wear under them. If you have already tried a full slip then my only other suggestion would be to go to www.victoriassecret.com and order a full body sculptor. This is not going to make the dress any less sheer, but will cover you up better than the slip. I might then wear al full slip as a little extra see-through protection.

Dear Amanda,
I am invited to a July day wedding, 11am - 5pm. I have a periwinkle dress, no sleeves just below the knee. Is the color fine? What color shoes should I wear? Is it true you should not wear stockings with open toe or sandals?
Thank you
Lucy

Dear Dear Lucy.
The periwinkle dress will look great. It is a beautiful colour and will be perfect for July. I would go with a pewter colored shoe or perhaps even lucite. I would not wear nylons with open toed shoes, as this is definitely the number two fashion faux pas.

Dear Amanda,
I'm having a fall wedding and so far I picked out hunter green to be one of my wedding colors. What other color would look good with hunter green?
Thanks,
Corinne

Dear Corinne
For a fall wedding, one of my favorite colours is gold. Green and gold is also a very classy combination, and gold is also a very popular colour right now, so you'll look very up-to-date. And in 20 years, looking back at your wedding pictures, they will still look very classy and very classic.

Hi Amanda,
I will be attending a military retirement ceremony (outdoor event) in mid June. I have purchased a nice looking black and white polka dot sheath dress with matching jacket. I have 2" strappy sandals to wear with it. My question is, what color stockings should I wear with this outfit. I'm from the old school where you don't go out without stockings, even though you are wearing sandals. Please help.
Barbara

Dear Barbara,
You are probably not going to like my answer. If you have ever read any of my other fashion Q & A's, stockings with strappy sandals are the number two fashion faux pas. You just shouldn't do it, it just doesn't fit. Open toe shoes and strappy sandals are made for bare feet. If you feel that you have to wear the stockings, I would go with a pump or a kitten heel with closed toes.

Hi Amanda,
Is it okay to wear knee-high boots or just-below-the-knees boots in the day during the warmer months? For example, a pencil skirt with below-the-knee boots when you're going to work. I know this is okay for fall, but what about in May?

Confused,
Zinnia F.

Dear Zinnia,
It seems to me that you like the knee-high boots just as much as I do, but no, you should not wear them during the spring and summer months. It will be ok to bring them out again in September, but I would leave them in the closet until then. Pencil skirts always look great with stilettos, kitten heels or even ballet flats, if you are tall enough to pull it off. And if it is required that you wear nylons to work, I would be fashionable and wear some of the great new patterned hose.

Until next time,

Hi Amanda :)
I am a black woman with brown skin; I have recently bought an emerald dress with subtle blue designs. I am having it delivered so I don't know if the colour would suit my skin. Please HELP!!!!!!!!

Dear Emerald,
The advantage black women have is that most colours look great on them. Caucasians, in particular have the tendency to look gray or yellow when wearing colours which do not suit their skin tone, but brown skin usually contrasts beautifully with any colour. This is one reason why white women strive to have a tanned body, because the fact is, colours are more flattering on darker skin. I think your emerald dress will look just beautiful!

Until next time,
Amanda Mandelli
