 anthropologie - summer 2004 |
We thank New York Fashion writer Amanda Mandelli for having written our fashion articles for two years. However, Amanda has now gone on to bigger and better things, and we wish her well.
Meanwhile, we are looking for a local fashion writer, someone who would like to attain some not inconsiderable prominence in the greater Victoria area - even become a fashion maven, perhaps - and share her acute fashion sense with the lively folk of our fair city. |

Hi Amanda,
I was told that brooches and pins should always be placed on the right side of the suit or dress. Is this true? Myra
Dear Myra,
This is not a rule that you should concern yourself with. You can wear your brooch on which ever side you would like. As a matter of fact, brooches have become very popular and people have been seen putting them in several different places, such as on pockets, hats and the backs of blue jeans. So, get creative with yours and don't worry about this rule.

Dear Amanda,
First you must know I live in Colorado. Second, I just started a job in the car dealership world. Dressing nice and appropriate is important. I purchased a pair of brown pants, but can't quite figure out what kind or color of shoes or socks to wear with them. I need shoes that are comfortable because I stand and walk often. The pants are not extremely long, so my socks show when I sit or walk. I have tried black, but I don't know if that's in. I want to wear them but just can't figure this out. Help!
The Coloradoan
Dear Coloradoan,
Black looks great with brown in my opinion. So, if you want to try this it will look fine. You can also wear brown, as long as the brown is darker than the brown of your pants.
Until next time,

Hi Amanda
Some belted jackets and dresses have their belts threaded through string-like belt loops. Are these belt loops only there to hold the belt on the garment for display and supposed to be removed after the garment is purchased and worn??????? They look so "temporary" that I can't believe they are supposed to stay on the garment. Thank you!
Cathy S
Dear Cathy,
If the loops that you are referring to are the thin strings that are put there to hold up the belt, yes, they are permanent. They are very flimsy, but they are made that way intentionally so that if they ever do start to fall off, or you would like to take them off, they will not leave a huge mark on your jacket.
Until next time,
Amanda Mandelli
