Victoria BC Internet Demographics |
Internet / Demographics
According to a study released May 15. 2001 by international research firm Ipsos-Reid, Sweden ranked at the top in 2000 with 65% of the population using the Web, followed by Canada with 63% and the United States at 59%.
And with a Greater Victoria population of 318.000 people [Stats Can. Jan. '98], this means over 190.000 Internet connected consumers, consisting almost exclusively of middle, upper and high income households -
the best market segment there is
Since then (Jan. 1998), the population of the Greater Victoria region has increased substantially, and so has Internet access.
For example: "Nearly seven million people worldwide joined the Internet from their homes in March 2001" - AC Nielsen eRatings.com, May 2. 2001.
Consequently, and at a very conservative estimate, at least 210.000 people now have Internet access in the Greater Victoria area.
In addition, thousands of people have Internet access at their work place - at local Universities, Colleges, Government offices, businesses, libraries, schools and 'cyber cafes'.
Indeed, as the following statistics [Nielsen Ratings] show, Internet use is substantially higher at work than at home.
