Lymphoma Linked to Pesticides |
 |
As the horror stories of DDT, DDE and PCBs have proven, it is the height of foolishness to think that we can put poisons into our environment and not have them end up in us. The only solution here is to avoid using all household and garden pesticides - at all costs - in your own environment, and to buy "organic" fruit and vegetables whenever possible.
|
Also avoid any fruit and vegetables from Mexico and South America, as DDT - although long banned in the US and Canada - is still being used there. And for those who have the space, consider growing your own completely poison-free and supremely healthy fruit and vegetables - as described in the GARDENING ARTICLES in these pages.
Original Abstract:
Pesticides Linked to Cancer
Dr. Jonathan D. Buckley of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and colleagues compared the pesticide exposures of 268 children who developed a type of cancer called non-Hodgkin's lymphoma against the exposures in healthy children.
The team assessed the children's and their parents' exposure to pesticides in the home a month before pregnancy, during pregnancy, or while nursing. The researchers also noted other areas of potential impact, including medication taken by the children, the occupation of the parents, and past medical treatments including x-rays.
Children whose mothers used pesticides in the home once or twice a week were nearly 2.5 times as likely to have non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Children whose mothers used pesticides on a more daily basis were 7 times more likely to have the cancer, according to the report published in the December 1st issue of the journal Cancer.
Pregnant women exposed to pesticides by professional exterminators in their homes were three times more likely to have a child with the cancer, and children directly exposed to pesticides were just over twice as likely to develop the disease.
