In October, 1996 CNN broadcast a news feature about the results of a study conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This study has documented that the level of lawn and garden herbicides, fungicides and insecticides in indoor carpets are from 10 to 100 times higher than they are outdoors. |
These herbicides and insecticides are carried inside on shoes and on pets, and readily accumulate in carpets. The CNN news documentary report was accompanied by a video reportage of four babies crawling around on a carpet - and mouthing every available toy.
A substantial contributing factor to the excessively high levels of herbicides and pesticides in carpets is that these pesticides are not degraded by sunlight, ultraviolet light and rain, and therefore persist in indoor carpets far longer than they do outdoors.
Exposure to home gardening pesticides has been strongly associated with hyperactivity, leukemia, and damage to the blood/brain barrier in children, and with birth defects in newborns due to maternal exposure. And due to the much smaller body-mass of babies, toddlers and small children, any given pesticide level is a far larger factor - and threat to their health - than to the far larger body-mass of an adult. Update May 27. 2000: Home and garden pesticides and herbicides are now strongly implicated in harming the health of our children -- CTV National News, May 27. 2000.
For a truly beautiful and "no hassle" alternative to herbicides and insecticides in your gardens go to POISON-FREE GARDENING in our "gardening scene".
As for those exuberantly errant dandelions in the lawn, it's far better to get one of those nifty digging tools - and get a bit of exercise - than to expose your children to high and persistent levels of potent poisons.
